What is Taekwondo?


Taekwondo is a Korean self defence martial art. It was introduced to the world by General Choi Hong-Hi who is the father and founder of Taekwondo.


The martial art became formally recognised in 1955 with the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) being formed in 1966.

Taekwondo can be described simply as a version of unarmed combat designed for self defence. Translated literally 'Tae' means to kick or smash with the foot. ' Kwon' is to destroy with the hand or fist. 'Do' means an art or way.


Taekwondo is taught with five main principles;


  • Courtesy,

  • Integrity,

  • Perseverance,

  • Self Control &

  • Indomitable Spirit.


With these main principles students develop inner strength and peace. These attributes are becoming more important in our modern world.


Taekwondo for Children

Students develop greater confidence and strength which can help in all conflict situations however large or small. Taekwondo can help all adults escape from the pressures of modern life simply by focusing on the training.
